The Radio Room

When Explorer was in service she was equipped with Marconi radios. Typically this equipment would be leased from Marconi, sometimes with a radio officer. When Explorer was decommissioned, Marconi would have taken their radios off the ship.  The radio room has since lain empty and neglected.

A couple of months ago Explorer had a visit from a volunteer at the museum of communications in Burntisland. Despite living 3 miles away for twenty years, I had no idea such a place existed.  A visit was called for. https://museumofcommunication.org.uk

The radio room sporting it’s Sunday name of WT office (for Wireless Telegraphy) is shown in this drawing located port side aft of the wheelhouse

The museum of communication was fascinating but more importantly, it resulted in communications with a radio ham in the far north called Simon GM8NYV.  Well that’s his callsign, not sure of his surname. Simon came into possession of a Sailor 1000 radio transceiver a few years ago which he has no use for and has donated it to Explorer. I drove up to Thurso last week and loaded the dismantled equipment into my car and it now resides on the Explorer, still dismantled pending refurbishment of the radio room.  There follows a YouTube video made by Simon of the equipment now in our greedy mitts
